International Wildlife Rehabilitation Symposium in Fort Lauderdale-2011

The International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council invites students to join them this November for the 2011 Symposium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This exciting learning and networking event offers students of Biology, Veterinary Technology, Wildlife Ecology, Pre-veterinary/Pre-health, Veterinary Medicine, Zoology or students of any discipline with an interest in wildlife issues the following opportunities to:
• Attend educational seminars and professional peer-reviewed papers presented by veterinarians, wildlife rehabilitation professionals, and biological researchers from around the world.
• Network and learn in informal settings (lunches, dinners, and cocktail hours) from wildlife care industry leaders from Florida and worldwide (veterinarians, conservation biologists, center leaders, professional rehabilitators).
• Take the IWRC's professional course in Basic Wildlife Rehabilitation for 13 state-recognized credit hours. This course covers the basics of wildlife rehabilitation including a hands-on cadaver lab to learn essential rehabilitation techniques. Learn more about this course at www.theiwrc.org (not included in symposium price). (Note - restrictions may apply with regard to transferability of credits to USF)
• Take a guided field trip to the everglades and tour and meet the staff of the South Florida Wildlife Center.
• Take International Bird Rescue's course in Oil-Spill Recovery (tentatively scheduled).

This is a great opportunity for students to improve their resumes with professional credentials, network with professionals in the field of wildlife rehabilitation, and gain valuable up-to-date scientific information and practice in hands-on animal rehab. To enable students to take advantage of this opportunity, the IWRC will provide a 10% discount per student to any department or club that registers 5 or more students to attend the conference. The Early Bird registration price for the three-day symposium is $160 for IWRC members and $190 for the general public (if registered prior to July 1st).

To learn more about the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council, visit their website at www.theiwrc.org.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://usfhonors.blogspot.com/2011/06/pre-vet-opportunity-international.html' title='Pre-Vet Opportunity! Schmidt College of Medicine has received accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education as a new and independent medical school and is now accepting applications for the 2011 entering class.

The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine is part of Florida Atlantic University, a state-supported public institution with 28,000 students, located in Boca Raton, Florida, just north of Fort Lauderdale and only a mile from the Atlantic Ocean.
Prior to accreditation, the College of Medicine served for six years as a regional medical campus and assembled an experienced faculty dedicated to teaching, while simultaneously developing all of the infrastructure necessary for providing a solid four-year medical education. These elements, together with the modern Integrated Patient-Focused Curriculum and affiliations with nine hospitals and clinical facilities in southeast Florida, provide an opportunity for qualified students to study medicine at a brand new medical school which has been built on the existing framework of a successful regional medical campus.

The mission of the College is two-fold: To train physicians who can provide the highest quality healthcare to a diverse population, and to produce physician-scientists who can help meet Florida’s initiatives in biomedical research and education.

An ideal applicant for the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine is one who has excelled in the classroom and on the MCAT, who has acquired a spectrum of life experiences, and who has made a sound decision to study medicine based on direct, first-hand patient contact experiences. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential as are personal traits such altruism, maturity, and responsibility. Productive research experiences are essential for the MD/PhD program.

For complete information about the admissions process and selection factors, the MD/PhD program, the curriculum, financial assistance, the campus and our clinical affiliates, visit our web site at http://med.fau.edu

Admissions highlights for the Charter 2011 Class
• Total class size is fixed at 64 students each year. Only US citizens and permanent residents may apply.
• Up to 10 students from states other than Florida may be accepted.
• Up to 10 students may be accepted to the combined MD/PhD program offered in conjunction with Scripps Florida of The Scripps Research Institute.
• Applications are especially encouraged from women and from qualified applicants in groups currently underrepresented in medicine as well as those from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, individuals from rural or underserved areas, and those with non-traditional educational backgrounds.
• Students must apply through AMCAS. The College of Medicine will be listed among the schools participating in AMCAS; applicants should designate the College as an additional institution to which their application should be forwarded.
• Letters of recommendation must be sent through the AMCAS Letters Program.
• MCAT is required; exam must be taken no later than January, 2011. January scores will be considered for the charter class only.
• No minimum GPA or MCAT is needed to complete a secondary application. The College hopes to enroll a class with numerical credentials generally comparable to those of students who matriculated at US medical schools last year.
• Secondary applications will be sent to everyone who sends their AMCAS application to the College of Medicine. The secondary application ($30 application fee; fee waivers honored) is available on line and should be completed as soon as possible and no later than May 15, 2011, to be considered.
• An evaluation interview conducted at the College of Medicine in Boca Raton is required
• Students will be notified immediately of any decision. Decisions are made on a rolling basis between late March and July, 2011.
• Scholarships based on merit, need and diversity are available.
• A laptop computer will be provided to each student.

IMPORTANT: The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine will not appear on the list of AMCAS-participating medical schools until a day or two AFTER February 24. At that time, applicants for the 2011 entering class can have their application and letters forwarded to the medical school through AMCAS. Between now and February 24, all prospective applicants should send their name and contact information to mdadmissions@fau.edu so they can receive developing information about the school and find out the instant they are able to apply through AMCAS. Although email is preferred, students can also call during business hours (8AM-5PM ET) at 561-297-0440.

All student queries should be sent to the email address and phone number shown above.

Human Anatomy for Undergraduates at Johns Hopkins

The eleventh annual summer course in Human Anatomy for Undergraduates will be offered by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine this year. Surprisingly few students are aware that podiatrists do complex surgery.

It is also an option for students who are athletes or interested in sports medicine. We have a surprising number of former athletes, dancers, runners, etc. that became interested through their activities. Sports medicine is a quickly growing field in medicine, and podiatry is a very large part of that.

Foot disease is the most common complication of diabetes leading to hospitalization. According to a recent survey, about 86,000 lower limbs are amputated annually due to complications from diabetes. Podiatrist can reduce amputations rates by 45% to 85% with proper care. Test prep materials will be provided.

This course will be offered on Tuesday evenings in SVC 1091 from 6:00-9:00pm. Selected students must be active Honors College students in good standing and demonstrate both financial need and readiness to take the MCAT and apply to medical school during the 2011 - 2012 cycle. It will be sold online for $35 at the link.

Practice test 6 will be retired from sale concurrently with the release of practice test 11 so that these items can be used for other preparation products. Volunteers visit patients in their homes, as well as in our hospice houses, area nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Office Assistance
Volunteers provide clerical assistance and administrative support at our resources centers, pharmacy and medical equipment department.

Children’s Programs
Volunteers assist with providing emotional support to grieving children and teens at the Circle of Love Center for Grieving Children and Camp Circle of Love.

Bereavement Support
Volunteers make condolence phone call to survivors and tell them about bereavement services, provide one-on-one support to survivors who need companionship or facilitate support groups for survivors who are interested in social interaction after the death of their loved ones.

Life’s Treasures Thrift Stores
Volunteers accept donations, sort and price items, stock merchandise and help customers. Volunteers also serve as cashiers and provide office assistance.

Special Events
Volunteers help support fund-raising events.

Ambassador Bureau
Volunteers educate the public regarding LifePath Hospice programs, services and volunteer opportunities at social, civic and religious organizations and at community fairs.

Summer Vacation? Stay motivated!

Summer is a great time to get involved in volunteer work and physician shadowing! Remember, being a pre-health student is a long-term committment and you should be an active member in your community.

Below is some information on one opportunity to get you started:

American Cancer Society - Road to Recovery program
2 hour training today at 11am @ Hope Lodge (USF Tampa campus)

Thursday, May 20, 2010 11:00am-1:00pm (lunch included)

The program is in urgent, urgent need of drivers to take cancer patients to and from their treatment appointments. Volunteers can drive based on their own personal schedule and can also decide which area they wish to drive. For instance, if they live in the USF area and wish to only drive to Moffitt, that is completely acceptable and welcomed. They need to have a vehicle that is properly maintained and smoke-free. The training is held at the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge on the USF Campus @ 12810 USF Magnolia Drive (see attached).
All are welcome to attend!

Questions or interested and can not make today’s training?
